The covid-19 pandemic has transformed society in various spheres, such as economic and social. With the emergence of the new disease, which is considered highly transmissible, it was possible to perceive an increase in the need – and also the demand – for controlled environments.
Against this backdrop, the Guardatech Cleanrooms project, as described by Joe Shackley in his article Case study: ISO Class 8 mobile controlled environment (2021), is created. Its main objective, from the beginning, was to develop mobile rapid response units to help UK companies and organizations fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the past, Guardatech Cleanrooms had already proposed and even developed a series of portable environments, which was called cleancube. However, with the new needs brought by the pandemic scenario, the project had to redesign your containers and modular buildings, a process that was developed in conjunction with the company Cignpost Diagnostics, responsible for providing Covid-19 tests and providing health services.
The development of Guardatech Cleanrooms
As pointed out above, Guardatech Cleanrooms, in partnership with Cignpost Diagnostics, developed a series of controlled environments. delivery of the first clean room mobile – which was called Luton Box Van – took place just three weeks after development began, and by November 2020, the project had already started a series of builds, such as:
– The conversion of a Tourism bus;
– The manufacture of seven Luton Box vans;
– The development of three modular constructions;
– Production of two containers;
– The development of two permanent laboratories.
Shackley, in his study, aimed to analyze the technical specifications of some of the projects built by the Guardatech Cleanrooms project in partnership with Cignpost Diagnostics, as well as the challenges and solutions found.
In relation to technical specifications, Shackley points out that the controlled environments were built, cleaned and installed according to the following parameters:
– Industry: analysis/diagnosis;
– Temperature/humidity: 21+/3 ºC;
– Plant: several units;
– ISO: 8.
In order for the parameters to be reached, however, the projects had to be developed in accordance with some specifications, such as:
Structural, for wall panels, ceiling panels, wall coverings, doors and floors.
Electrical, with regard to the installed sockets and the safety isolating transformer.
Mechanical Engineering, as regards filters, ventilation units, air conditioners and mobile sinks.
Real Time, with regard to the pressure gauges installed.
Furniture, for workbenches, benches and wall hooks.
What were the main challenges observed in the case study?
According to Shackley, one of the main challenges faced by projects dedicated to building clean environments to help fight the covid-19 pandemic is related to the short period of time that exists for the development of buildings.
