What is it, and what is the purpose of pass through?
“Pass through” or “pass box”, the names may vary, but the tool, functionality and purpose are exactly the same: the equipment is used to transfer materials between the clean rooms. It is primarily installed with the main objective of avoiding the so-called “cross-contamination”. That is, it prevents a product from carrying contamination from one part of the process to the other.
It works like this: a certain product that is in a room with an “x” classification that will move to a room with a “y” classification, in the case of opening a simple door, it would generate a classification loss, in this case, the pass through keeps always one of the closed doors.
It can also be used in cases where the product has not yet gone through the cleaning or decontamination process, consequently, it can be loaded with many particles of dirt that are transported through the air. Therefore, before handling this product in question, it is of fundamental importance to transition through the junction box, so that it can be transported from one stage of the process to the other, free from any type of contamination.
It is inside the equipment that decontamination and safe transfer of products is guaranteed. In this way, contamination is not carried between the process areas. Once the product is inside the transfer case, it is properly sterilized so that it can be received by the other part of the process.
Basically, communication is carried out between the two parts (or areas) of the process, through the pass through, without contamination. Such junction boxes for clean rooms are built in aluminum, painted steel or AISI 304 stainless steel structure.
Pass through functionality in cleanrooms
In a clean room project, the interconnection of the two parts of the process is done through two double-glazed doors. And, in a complementary way, an interlocking system with electromagnetic closure and green/red signaling for opening control is installed.
The interlocking system is precisely to ensure that the two doors of the equipment do not open simultaneously, causing a uniform air flow, perfect decontamination of the products that are inside the equipment. That way, there is no risk of the door, for whatever reason, opening and compromising the entire process.

The pass through is used in a similar way to antechambers, following the method of transferring material from outside to inside the clean room, check the process in detail:

Whoever is outside the clean room opens the door and sanitizes the pass through

A layer of packaging is removed and the object is placed inside the equipment

Then the professional closes the pass box

From there, the object is sanitized

At the end of the process, whoever is on the other side of the pass through opens the inner door and removes the object.
As with the antechambers, the pass through must have an interlock. This prevents one door from being opened if the other is not closed, thus preventing contamination.
